Like all hashes, SJH3 was not
formed, but founded in 1979 by Ian "Chino" Young and
co-founder, Bill "Bambi" Barbee. Their first run
sported 7 hashers and from there, it went all uphill, reaching a
climax at 76 regular runners on a typical Monday night Hash.
Attendance didn't shoot up to 76 hashers overnight, but took
about five
years. Costa Rica was obviously ready for a Hash, and SJH3 fit
that need.

In the 'old
days', almost all trails were set by
environmentally, incorrect spray paint. Checks
and trail marks remained remnants of all the trails
for years, before finally fading away, or being cut
down for developmental progress and expansion.
Eventually the coffee fields became condos and
private property became just that, private.
Over the years many
dignitaries participated in SJH3's runs; stately
Ambassadors, famous authors, Professors, CEO's of
large international corporations, Bankers, Wankers,
Ministers, girlies, and yes, the run-of-the-mill
average Joe's. It didn't matter who you were,
just as long as you could drink beer, sing song and
get along with others, you were welcomed.

The first couple of
years SJH3 was limited pretty much to
non-Costa Ricans and the men only. But, after
a few years, "Ticos"
and the "lady-folk" alike infiltrated into the
thrills and
excitement of our Monday night Hash. For years our Christmas
parties were worth waiting for, infamous for being
well-planned events and the best parties in town.
Over the
following years, SJH3 had sponsored several joint
Hashes with the likes of Panama, the Bahamas and
Hockessin, Delaware from the USA.

SJH3 has hashed
practically every mountain, every volcano, crossed
most every river, pissed on the beaches, in the
jungles and scampered willfully within the junkyards
throughout this small tropical paradise. As a
group, we've traveled to Mexico and Panama.
The SJH3 has participated in UCR's annual "24 hour
Brick" relay races, the International Trans-Isthmus
relay of Panama, and the grueling San
Jose-Puntarenas relay race, where historically
we have taken last place every time.

In the year
of 1983, our recently elected and newest
Grand Master, Patchwork Quilt, got a hare up his arse
about a special Hash event and would not let go with his
bugging us to death with his Hasher's dream.
This 'dream' was soon to become known as "The
Inter - Americas'
Hash", and later on in Hash History, as just the "InterAm" for short. Close to 100
Hashers arrived to the 1st InterAm in Costa Rica for total debauchery and the
makings of the memories which are folk-like tales
still told, even today, once the
brew starts flowing. Unlike the InterAm's that
followed, we housed these guests in our homes like large
pajama parties for the entire four day event. |
From Costa Rica the
InterAm moved to Atlanta, Philadelphia, San Diego and so on
until the tenth event, which returned once more to Costa
Rica, but this time with over 900 Hashers in attendance.
|
We had
learned our lesson, no more home stays this time,
there were just too darn many of them, and they
arrived crazed ready for action. We had
arranged to place them all in the friendly Hotel Irazu and the San Jose Palacios
hotel for the entire four days of
running around the countryside, partying hard, making yet
another mark in the Hash House Harriers' history books of not only the
International Hash World, but Costa Rica's History
books as
well. |
 |
Well, the InterAms
and Joint Hashes
have come and gone, and our group still survives, though the
days of 76 in attendance are long gone. The runs have
been switched to every-other-week and on held on Saturdays, but the
song, the down downs and the comradeship still flourish
today, some 27 years later.

During a 10 year bicycle trip throughout the continents,
Fancy Pants,
cycling this time from Mexico to Costa Rica, arrived in San
Jose for a two month pause witnessing
Hooligan's
completion of two years as Grand Master. With little
hesitation, FP
decided to make an announcement and decreed himself as
the new GM. This short lived Mastership of nearly two
months was passed on to
Stubby,
when he once again
boarded his bicycle and pedaled off into the wind from thus
he had come. On On
